Stick drift is the phenomenon where an analog stick registers unintended input even when at rest. It's caused by wear in the internal potentiometer sensors, dust accumulation, or mechanical degradation of the conductive film track inside the joystick module.
Our diagnostic engine applies a 0.05 resting threshold (5% of full-scale deflection) as the boundary between "healthy" and "drifting." This is calculated as:
magnitude = sqrt(x² + y²) | if magnitude > 0.05 → drift detected
When you rotate a stick in a circle, the ideal path is a perfect unit circle (radius = 1.0). Our engine bins the 360-degree rotation into 360 angular segments and records the maximum radius at each angle. The average circularity error is the mean of |r − 1.0| across all recorded bins, expressed as a percentage. Lower values indicate a healthier, more precise stick.
| Game | Left Stick | Right Stick |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: MW3 | 5-8% | 5-8% |
| Apex Legends | 5-10% | 5-10% |
| Fortnite | 10-12% | 10-12% |
| Rocket League | 5-7% | 5-7% |
Stick drift occurs when an analog stick registers movement without being touched. It's typically caused by worn potentiometer sensors, dust inside the mechanism, or mechanical wear of the conductive film. This results in unintended cursor movement, character strafing, or camera rotation in games.
A perfect circle has 0% error. Grade A (under 2.5% average error) is excellent, Grade B (2.5-6.5%) is acceptable with minor deadzone adjustment, and Grade C (over 6.5%) indicates significant wear requiring cleaning or replacement. Most factory-fresh controllers score within 3-5% error.
Yes, for minor drift you can try: increasing in-game deadzone, cleaning with compressed air, or applying electronic contact cleaner around the stick base. For severe drift, the potentiometer modules need replacement, which requires opening the controller. Hall-effect joystick upgrades eliminate drift entirely.
